Karsen’s Grill – A Local Favorite!
When people ask us where the local people love to eat and hang out in Old Town, one of the very first places we mention is Karsen’s Grill. For over 20 years now, Karsen’s has been serving up some of the best food, best beer, best sports news and best local ambiance. They have become a favorite neighborhood bar not just of the people who live in Old Town, but of guests returning to the area year after year. Want to catch a game, or talk sports? Karsen’s always has you covered, but don’t write this off as just another sports bar. The food here is great and the nightly dinner specials put Karsen’s in a league of their own!
Before we get carried away with the food, let us take a detour and discuss some important stuff very dear to our hearts. That’s right, the wine. Not content to serve wine out of a twist top, Karsen’s has a great selection of wine to go with that dinner. So don’t think that you are going to have to sacrifice your beverage of choice. No compromise needed here, you can enjoy the great menu WITH a nice glass of wine. (Note to you guys, you can keep your girl happy and still catch the game, smart!) Did we mention that Karsen’s Grill also serves a great selection of beer and they have a full bar, so if wine isn’t your thing with dinner, they got you covered. Karsen’s is also one of the few places in town that serves Lebatt Blue!
Okay now we can get to the food. One of our personal favorites on the menu is the Green Mary Lou. If you have never heard of one (don’t worry, we didn’t either) the Green Mary Lou is an extra large flour tortilla stuffed with Queso Dip, topped with Karsen’s fabulous homemade Machaca Beef, green chili sauce and Cheddar & Jack Cheese. Wow. But we warn you, it’s definitely a meal so come hungry! During the summer, the Green Mary Lou is one of the Cool Summer Specials and at $5, it leaves money still in your wallet for that adult beverage!
In the mood for something a bit lighter? Karsen’s offers plenty of salad choices; we tried the Buffalo Chicken Salad and were not disappointed. Very tasty! The chicken was boneless and skinless, not fried, which was a great change from normal sports bar fare and a healthier option. The chicken is sautéed in Buffalo Wing Sauce and then served over a bed of green leaf and romaine lettuce with your choice of dressing, Low Fat Raspberry Vinaigrette, Caesar, Italian, Thousand Island, Ranch, Bleu Cheese, and Honey Mustard, most of which are made in house. Be sure to add some crumbled Blue Cheese for a nice addition.
Of course what would a bar be without a Hamburger? Yep, Karsen’s version is one of the best in Old Town, but don’t take our word for it… here is a review from the Examiner calling it “Scottsdale’s best kept burger secret”. We decided to throw some bacon on it and one of the best things about the Karsen’s Burger is that there are plenty of options to customize your burger to your liking. No one-size burger fits all here, have it YOUR way. The burger is ½ Grilled Ground Sirloin Burger served on a great tasting toasted onion roll with tomato and onion. Add cheese, bacon or Chili Con Carne for your own version. The burger was cooked perfectly, very tasty and definitely something we will come back often for.
In the mood for a sandwich instead? Karsen’s has a variety of both hot and cold sandwiches. Per their recommendation, we tried the Club Sandwich on Rye and not only was it a great looking sandwich, but delicious as well. Our only regret was that we couldn’t finish it all, so bring a friend to share and the problem is solved! See mama didn’t raise no fool! The Club Sandwich is a triple decker with Honey Ham, Smoked Turkey, Maple Cured Bacon, Swiss and Chedder, lettuce & tomato. The surprise here is the Green Chili Mayo and the Marbled Rye Bread was a perfect touch!
Stop by Karsen’s, chances are you will find the owners John or Ray behind the bar. Definitely one of the friendliest places in town, and a haven for locals or industry people. Karsen’s has built up a loyal following by offering great dinner specials…. Great food at great prices. Sunday is the Machaca Burro; Monday is a 10 oz. Pork Chop; Tuesday is Spaghetti & Meatballs; Wednesday is Meatloaf; Thursday is Fajitas and Sunday they offer an All You Can Eat Breakfast Buffet served from 10 – noon. Karsen’s also has Appetizer specials daily from 2 – 6 pm.
